It was such a crazy journey.
Arrived in Melbourne on time and all ready to go. Said my goodbyes and headed through those big scary doors! Made it through customs and security and all that. Went and sat in the gate lounge and we boarded about 10min late.
Everyone was on the plane and ready to go when we heard an announcement from the captain, that one of the instruments wasn’t working properly and the engineers were just getting a replacement part and we’d be on the way within half an hour. Turns out they had run out of replacement parts. So we asked our friendly neighbours Emirates if they had a spare part we could borrow. That took another 20 min, and came back with nothing. So the solution? Have someone drive the part up from Avalon airport….which would take about 2 hours once it was all installed. So we all disembarked the plane and they gave us food vouchers to spend in the terminal. By the time we all got off the plane we were already an hour behind schedule.
We ended up reboarding around 5.45pm. Everyone got on the plane really quickly, as we were all eager to be heading off. We started to push back out of the terminal and heard another announcement from the captain. One of the exit doors was showing that it was open and we needed the engineers to come back and look at it. So we moved back into the terminal, and got that problem rectified. By the time we were down the runway and into the air it was 7.00pm and we were two and a half hours late.
Which was especially awesome because I had a 3 hour lay over in Singapore. My grand plan of staying awake for the 7 hours leg became very difficult, because we were now almost 3 hours behind schedule. But I managed to make some friends and we spent a few hours chatting. I even met a girl sitting across the aisle from me, who is also going to study education at Malmo and is doing exactly the same subjects as me!
We arrived at Singapore at 12.20am local time, and my flight was due to leave at 11.59pm, which means I just missed it. Luckily, the flight I was on to Singapore was also heading on to London, and because it was delayed , it was the only flight leaving at that time of night. So I got transferred, and by the time I finished at the transfer desk, I had to head through security and straight onto the plane for my 13hour leg.
I managed to sleep for majority of the flight, but was awake from what I calculated to be 4.30am Malmo time.
We arrived in the London, and took the shuttle bus across to Terminal 5, which took forever. By the time I got through security, I had only half an hour until I had to board my flight to Copenhagen.
The flight to Copenhagen took 1.5hours and it went so quickly! Compared to the other flights I had been on.
Arrived in Copenhagen alright, went to the carousel to get my bags, and after waiting for an hour and seeing the same bags go around and around, I decided to report that my bag had not made it. With all the delays and flight changes I wasn’t particularly surprised that my bag got lost.
When reporting that my bag was lost, they asked for an address to send my bag to, but I didn’t even know what my address was going to be! So they took my number and said they’d call me if they found it.
So off I went to buy my train ticket and head on over to Malmo. I found a nice guy on the platform who told me which train I needed to get on and we chatted on the train until we reached Central Station. There I found some fadders (mentors) waiting for us, and they walked us across the road to uni (3min) to get all our paperwork sorted out.
Once we were checked it, signed our housing contract, been given our keys, signed up for rental insurance, purchased a pillow and blanket, and registered for a day trip later in the month, we got driven to our accommodation. My building is a beautiful red brick building with ivy climbing the walls and bunny rabbits on the front lawn!
Because I didn’t have any of my belongings, I chucked my bags in my room and headed straight to the shops. Luckily there is a brand new shopping centre about 5 min walk from my place, and the shops don’t close until 7pm here. So I managed to get a couple of changes of clothes, some linen and towels, that should hopefully last me until my luggage arrives.
The fadders organised for all of us to head out to get to know all the exchange students. So we all met at 8pm on the lawn and walked down town. It was really cool, because it didn’t really get dark until around 10pm, even so when we were walking home it wasn’t really dark.
The weather here is lovely, it was 25C and sunny here yesterday, although as soon as I hopped into bed last night, it started pouring with rain, thunder and lightning. Yet this morning there is no more sign of rain, it looks like it’s going to be another lovely day!
